Campus Free Expression: A New Roadmap for Trustees
This resource for trustees presents recommendations for protecting academic freedom and free expression on college campuses. The Roadmap series identifies four challenges that all leaders in higher education must face head-on to protect academic freedom and freedom of expression:
- Acknowledging the tension between free expression and inclusivity;
- Promoting viewpoint diversity among both students and faculty;
- Supporting policies that protect academic freedom and free expression;
- Making the skills and dispositions necessary for academic and civic discourse a central aim of the college experience.
The Roadmap then provides specific recommendations for trustees, including offering budgetary support for academic freedom, free expression, and viewpoint diversity; defending academic freedom in scholarship, intramural speech, and extramural speech; and including academic freedom and freedom of expression in trustee orientation and continuing education.
