Campus Free Expression: A New Roadmap for Student Affairs

This resource for student affairs staff presents recommendations for protecting academic freedom and free expression on college campuses. The Roadmap series identifies four challenges that all leaders in higher education must face head-on to protect academic freedom and freedom of expression:

  1. Acknowledging the tension between free expression and inclusivity;
  2. Promoting viewpoint diversity among both students and faculty;
  3. Supporting policies that protect academic freedom and free expression;
  4. Making the skills and dispositions necessary for academic and civic discourse a central aim of the college experience.

This report provides recommendations crafted specifically for student affairs leadership. These recommendations include integrating free expression and academic freedom policies and philosophies into student affairs staff orientations; empowering students and student leaders to serve as partners in free expression programming; and integrating free expression modules into first-year orientation programming.
