Campus Free Expression: A New Roadmap for Presidents

This resource for university presidential leadership teams presents recommendations for protecting academic freedom and free expression on college campuses. The Roadmap series identifies four challenges that all leaders in higher education must face head-on to protect academic freedom and freedom of expression:

  1. Acknowledging the tension between free expression and inclusivity;
  2. Promoting viewpoint diversity among both students and faculty;
  3. Supporting policies that protect academic freedom and free expression;
  4. Making the skills and dispositions necessary for academic and civic discourse a central aim of the college experience.

The Roadmap offers specific recommendations that presidential leadership teams can pursue to uphold their institution’s commitment to free expression and academic freedom, such as modeling free expression, viewpoint diversity, and inclusion at senior leadership levels; carefully considering when to take institutional positions on social and political issues; and systematically reviewing and consistently enforcing free expression and academic freedom policies.
